Prime Minister John Key says the latest big aftershock in Christchurch is likely to further delay reinsurance needed to rebuild the city.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says some inner-city red-zone buildings suffered more damage as a result of the magnitude 5.5 quake on Sunday night.

Mr Key says it is hard to begin rebuilding while the shaking continues.
