EQC contents payments now $7.5m a week

The Earthquake Commission says new figures show it has been paying about $7.5 million per week to settle contents claims.

In August, the commission more than doubled its estimated liability - the amount it expects to pay out in claims - from $3.05 to $7.07 billion.

EQC says it's currently processing about 38,000 contents claims, but many more still need documentation to be provided by customers.

The commission is running clinics to help elderly people get their supporting documents togeether.

It has guaranteed that all completed claims received by 24 October will be paid by Christmas.
