People in Canterbury have until Monday to hand in the necessary paperwork to the Earthquake Commission if they want to make sure their claims for household contents are paid by Christmas.

EQC has guaranteed it will settle all contents claims lodged before 24 October by Christmas.

Canterbury general manager Bruce Emson says 70,000 claims have already been settled, nearly 40,000 are being processed, and a further 70,000 can't be processed because of a lack of documentation.

EQC has also guaranteed to have all quake-damaged properties assessed by Christmas.

Some 100,000 have been done so far and there are another 60,000 to go.
