IAG offers some cover for trades helping with rebuild

New Zealand's largest insurance company IAG is offering some cover for tradespeople wanting to move to Christchurch to help with the city's earthquake rebuild.

Insurance companies have been refusing to offer new policies to homeowners and businesses in Canterbury until aftershocks from the September and February quakes subside.

IAG, which operates NZI and State Insurance, says providing contents-only cover for tradespeople and labourers will help ensure workers are not put off coming to the city once the rebuild gets under way.

The company estimates an extra 30,000 workers will be needed in Christchurch at the peak of the rebuild.
