Residents in the suburb of Northwood in Christchurch say they can finally get their lives together and get on with rebuilding their homes.

More than 6000 homes in the residential orange zone were on Friday reclassified as green, giving their owners the go-ahead to repair or rebuild their homes.

Northwood Residents Association chairman Clive Smith says a couple of people left the neighbourhood as they were living in limbo and could not do anything until the Government decided on the future of the land.

Mr Smith says the remaining residents can the residents can breathe a sigh of relief and move forward.
