Stall-holders who have been displaced from Christchurch's tourist markets since the February earthquake are seeking a site from which to trade near the new Cashel St mall.

The new mall - 27 shops operating out of 70 shipping containers - opened for the first time on 29 October, attracting thousands of shoppers.

A spokesperson for the Cathedral Square and Arts Centre markets, Gloria Verweij, says about 120 stall-holders need a site from which to trade.

She says, while they have the temporary use of the old St Elmo Courts site on Montreal St, a market adjacent to the new mall would add to the shopping experience, both for locals and tourists.

Ms Verweij says she is also talking with the Christchurch City Council about a market site along Rolleston Ave to attract cruise ship tourists.
