Families hail inquiries into quake rescue attempts

Victims of February's earthquake in Christchurch are pleased the police have begun inquiries into how people were rescued in the aftermath of the disaster.

Their action follows concerns that people who survived the quake might have died during rescue efforts.

The police are seeking video footage of rescue efforts at the Canterbury Television building, where 115 people died.

Detective Inspector David Long says they want more information about the circumstances of some of those deaths, especially since some people survived the initial quake but died later.

One was Dr Tamara Svetanova, who is believed to have died when part of the building she was sheltering in collapsed after rescue work had begun.

Her husband Srecko Svetanov has engaged the Christchurch barrister Nigel Hampton QC.

Mr Hampton wants a special inquiry into how Search and Rescue did their jobs, but accepts the issue might end up thrashed out in the Coroner's Court.
