The plans to make the earthquake damaged Christchurch Cathedral safe are being presented to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority.

Church officials say some parts of the cathedral will have to demolished at an estimated to cost of about $4 million.

The Church Property Trust will submit documents on Tuesday that include an interim make-safe methodology for the building and confirmation it has the money to do the work.

It will also provide a list and locations of church artefacts that may be retrievable.

The treasures include the flag Sir Edmund Hillary flew when he opened Scott Base in 1957, the church organ and the pulpit.

The cathedral will be deconsecrated on Wednesday to allow the work to be carried out.
