Brooklands resident surprised at red zoning

A Christchurch resident whose home is one of 417 Brooklands properties added to the red zone believes the land is safe to live on and any problems could be fixed with a proper drainage system.

Red zone areas are deemed unsuitable for continued residential occupation and residents must sell their land to the government and move elsewhere.

Les Griffiths, who has lived in his Brooklands home for 51 years, says the decision has shocked him as he did not think the land was that bad.

Mr Griffiths says he does not believe authority reports that land in Brooklands has dropped in some places by up to one metre.

He says the drainage system in the area has never worked and the liquefaction problem experienced in the earthquakes can be countered through an effectivea system.
