Makers surprised by minimal damage to Christchurch organ

The Austrian makers of the Christchurch Town Hall organ says it sustained "unbelievably" minimal damage in the earthquakes since September 2010.

A report produced for the Christchurch City Council by the president of Rieger-Orgelbau, Wendelin Eberle, says the 14-year-old organ's structure and its delicate mechanisms are undamaged.

Mr Eberle visited from Austria this month to inspect the organ.

He says any work that needs to be done should be covered by the council's insurance.

The council is deciding the future of the Town Hall, which was badly damaged in the February earthquake.
