People will be able to enter Cathedral Square on foot for the first time since the February earthquake when a temporary walkway is opened this weekend.
The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says the walkway between the new Cashel Mall shopping area and Cathedral Square will allow 300 people every hour to visit the central business district.
It will be open from 9am to 8pm at weekends until 11 December.
Recovery authority chief executive Roger Sutton says he is confident that people will be able to see first hand the significant amount of work that is going on to get the city back on its feet.
He says there are some risks and dangers in the walkway and it will be essential that all visitors carry identification on their body, not in a backpack or handbag.
