Three men contracted to work in Christchurch's inner city red zone have been suspended after it was alleged they were smoking marijuana.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says a member of the public reported seeing a group of workers smoking marijuana in their car just before heading through the cordons to work.

The incident took place on 16 November.

The authority says it notified police and the company the men worked for.

It says the company has suspended the men pending an investigation.
