The construction industry says too few people are enrolling in trade training courses to meet the needs of the Christchurch rebuild.
The warning comes from the BETA alliance of construction and infrastructure training organisations.
It says the country will need 26,000 more construction and infrastructure workers within the next two and a half years - 16,000 of them for the Christchurch rebuild.
BETA says, however, that people are not enrolling in courses or apprenticeships because the jobs are not there yet.
Christchurch polytechnics confirm that view, saying enrolments for 2012 do not yet reflect the expected boom in construction and infrastructure jobs.
