The St John Ambulance service in Christchurch has been given $70,000 to buy an emergency hospital kit so it can better respond to disasters.

Money donated by Rotary clubs from New Zealand and around the world was presented at a ceremony on Saturday morning.

The general manager of St John, David Thomas, says it will be used to buy a makeshift hospital that can be set up anywhere within minutes.

Mr Thomas says the kit is exactly like what was used in Latimer Square following the February earthquake.

He says the Christchurch ambulance service has lost a lot of equipment since the quake, so donations like this one are all the more important.
