A walkway through Christchurch's quake-stricken Cathedral Square is proving to be popular, with nearly 20,000 people making their way along it last weekend.

Canterbury Recovery Authority chief executive Roger Sutton says that while some locals find it hard to head back into the central city most are grateful for the opportunity.

The walkway has allowed the public into the square for the first time since the February earthquake.

It will be open for the third and final time this weekend.
