A walkway through the centre of Christchurch into Cathedral Square is being extended by a weekend.
It was due to close on Sunday. The walkway follows a route along Colombo Street, beneath several buildings that are being prepared for demolition.
Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Authority says the work on the largest building, the BNZ building, is progressing well.
But chief executive Roger Sutton says because the demolition work is not yet started, the walkway can safely remain open longer than anticipated.
Over the past two weekends, more than 40,000 people walked from the Re:Start Mall to Cathedral Square.
Mr Sutton expects similar numbers in the next two weekends.
