Bishop says she won't resign over cathedral view

The Bishop of Christchurch says she has no intention of resigning over complaints about her handling of the future of the badly quake-damaged Christchurch Cathedral.

Victoria Matthews has spoken out in response to comments from Anglican Church member Hayden Rawstron, who has accused her of failing to grasp the significance of the cathedral to locals.

Bishop Matthews, originally from Canada, has said it should be rebuilt with a new design, instead of staying true to the original plans.

She says she does not know how many people Mr Rawstron represents, but is not aware of him attending any recent meetings on the building's fate.

Bishop Matthews says she regards his views as out of touch and believes she continues to have a great deal of support from the community.

Mr Rawstron has said the disagreement over the future of the cathedral is what led to the Dean, Peter Beck, standing down.
