EQC notification policy changed

The Earthquake Commission has reversed a policy of disclosing details of building damage only to the building's owner.

At the Royal Commisson of Inquiry into the Christchurch Earthquakes on Thursday, it was revealed that assessors had reported to the owner of a Worcester Street building that it might collapse, but neighbouring businesses were not informed.

The building collapsed in February's quake, killing two people next door.

EQC chief executive Ian Simpson said the policy at the time was to inform building owners only.

He said people were nervous that if details of damage to their property were known, it would affect their property prices.

But that policy was changed in October.
