Tabernacle doors missing in Christchurch

A pair of bronzed tabernacle doors at the Catholic Basilica in Christchurch, valued at almost $200,000, is missing.

The doors have been missing since the February earthquake, police have been advised.

The Ria Bancroft bronzed doors were sculpted for the cathedral in the 1970s.

Cathedral Management Board chair Lance Ryan says he is hopeful they are in the safe-keeping of a well-meaning parishioner.

He says a person made themselves known to one of the staff working on the Cathedral site and said they were collecting the doors to put them in safe keeping.

All scrap metal dealers in the region are being asked to keep an eye out for the doors.

The disappearance was noticed by staff several weeks ago after all storage lockers were checked.
