The public will be able to walk through parts of the devastated Christchurch's inner-city on Christmas Eve after a decision to allow a temporary walkway to stay open.
The walkway through the Cathedral Square was to close at the weekend to allow demolition work in the central business district to be carried out.
However, the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says it will stay open for the last time on Christmas Eve from 9am to 3pm.
