People in Christchurch have been summoned for jury duty for the first time since the February earthquake.

The Ministry of Justice's deputy secretary for Christchurch, Jared Mullen, says it is another important step in restoring the full range of justice services to the city.

District Court trials will begin at a central city courthouse on 13 February next year and jury summonses have been sent to 400 residents this week.

Jury trials have been held outside Christchurch, mainly in Timaru, since February.
