Quake anniversary public holiday not on Cabinet agenda

The Government says no consideration has been given to making 22 February a public holiday for Cantabrians to mark the first anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake.

Plans for the day have been announced, which include a memorial service in North Hagley Park and the presentation of Earthquake Awards to people identified as heroes by the community.

In March last year, a public holiday for Cantabrians was declared on the day of the memorial service for the 181 people who lost their lives in the powerful 6.3-magnitude quake.

Some employers criticised the move, concerned at the extra costs the holiday would burden them with.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee on Tuesday said there has been no thought given to granting another holiday. He says while it is important to remember those who lost their lives, it is also important for Cantabrians to move on.

Meanwhile, Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says the first anniversary will be a chance for people of Canterbury to put the earthquakes behind them at the same time as they remember those who died.
