Demolition of BNZ building begins

Demolition work has begun on the BNZ Building in Christchurch.

The high rise in Cathedral Square, which dates from the 1960s, is on the site of the original Bank of New Zealand offices.

The building was badly damaged in the 6.3 earthquake on 22 February.

Demolition work is due to be completed in July and will be carried out using a 35 metre high excavator that was purpose built to demolish London's Wembley Stadium.

The bank is continuing to search for a new permanent location for its head office in Christchurch.
