Financial help to dump hazardous waste

The Government is providing $509,000 to help residents in Christchurch's red zone to safely dispose of their hazardous household waste.

Environment Minister Nick Smith says the earthquakes in Canterbury have caused an unprecedented amount of waste and any hazardous material needs to be dealt with in a safe and environmentally sound way.

He says items such as cleaning products, paint, LPG and garden sprays will be able to be disposed off at a free drop-off point or via a mobile service.

Dr Smith says properties in the red zone will also be swept for any remaining hazardous waste prior to demolition.
