An additional commemorative event will be held to mark the first anniversary of the 22 February Christchurch earthquake.

Christchurch City Council has announced the event will be held at Latimer Square on the morning of the anniversary.

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says it will have a family focus.

More details will be released closer to the date.

The anniversary is also being marked by public events at North Hagley Park.

A Civic Memorial Service will be held at midday, followed by the presentation of the Christchurch Earthquake Awards.

Mr Parker says he expects most people wanting to attend a public commemorative event will go to the Civic Memorial Service, which is designed as the key public event of the day.
