Business leader urges Christchurch to battle on

A Christchurch business leader says the community has to pick itself up and battle on, despite spreading problems from the city's earthquakes.

A large section of Merivale Mall was closed until further notice on Saturday as engineers say parts of it are earthquake-prone. Eighteen shops, two kiosks and a supermarket were affected.

Earlier in February, a block of luxury apartments near Hagley Park was condemned because of damage from a quake on 23 December last year.

The head of the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce says it is enormously frustrating, as people think they are getting through it but keep getting knocked back.

Peter Townsend says the latest events are a curse for those working in Merivale Mall, but they will move on and get going again.
