Apartment buildings to be demolished this week

The urgent demolition of two apartment buildings in earthquake-hit Christchurch wil begin on Tuesday after a recent engineering assessment found they could collapse in an aftershock.

The buildings are part of the Terrace on the Park complex which has been unoccupied since the devastating February quake last year.

The Canterbury Eathquake Recovery Authority says the week-long demolition is considered extremely dangerous and will be done with far-reaching machinery from the other side of the road.

It says there is a good chance the buildings will collapse as soon as demolition begins.
