Fresh damage in Christchurch CBD

Part of Montreal Street has been fenced off after the discovery of fresh damage in a nearby building.

But the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says it still hopes to have most of the central city cordon lifted by April.

It says serious damage has been found in the old Teachers' College building, now known as the Peterborough Apartments, on the corner of Montreal and Peterborough streets.

The authority says it is working with the city council to help minimise the impact of the road closure on traffic routes.

It says several central city hotels are on schedule to reopen over the next year and the New Regent Street shopping precinct could open within six months.
