The company wants to build accommodation for more than 400 workers employed under the recognised seasonal employer scheme, and include office blocks, shops and sports fields.

Vinepower Contracting director Jono Bushell said the aim was to create a place where communities could live together in a place that addresses recreational and cultural needs.

He said the worker facility, planned for a former motel site in Blenheim, would also ease strain on available housing in the town.

The top of the South Island relies on a seasonal workforce to harvest crops like grapes and apples.

The consent hearing is scheduled for next month in Blenheim.
