Southland swimmer Natalie Wiegersma has been pipped for a medal at the Commonwealth Games, finishing fourth in the 200m individual medley final.

The 20-year-old swam a personal best and set a national record, only to miss out on a bronze medal by 0.03 of a second.

Lauren Boyle improved on her time in the heats of the 200m freestyle, but finished seventh in the final.

Boyle qualified for the final in third place, and while she threatened the leaders at times, the Aucklander fell off the pace in the final 50-metre stretch.

Australia's Kylie Palmer won the gold medal with a time of 1 minute 57.50 seconds. Boyle finished in 1 minute 58.96 seconds.

In the men's 50 metres backstroke Daniel Bell qualified fifth-fastest for the final, with Gareth Kean also making it to the medal swim-off.

Hayley Palmer was eight-equal fastest in the 50m butterfly, but decided against taking part in swim-off for the last spot in the final, instead concentrating on the 100 freestyle on Tuesday.
