New Zealand decathlete Brent Newdick is in third place overall after the first day of competition at the Commonwealth Games.
Newdick scored a personal best in the long jump and equalled his personal best in the high jump.
He is only 140 points behind the leader from Canada. Known as a good second day athlete, he should be a contender for a medal.
