New Zealand weightlifter Richard Patterson won a silver medal in the men's under-85kg event at the Commonwealth Games on Friday.

Patterson, 27, was in first place after the snatch, successfully lifting 150 kilograms.

But he struggled in the clean and jerk and was successful in only one of his attempts.

His 181kg lift gave him a total of 331kg, 2kg less than Australian gold medalist Simplice Ribouem, who had lifted 183kg in the clean and jerk to claim the title.
