New Zealand swimmer Natalie Wiegersma has withdrawn from the final of the women's 400m individual medley at the Commonwealth Games due to ill-health.

Wiegersma qualified for the final 9 seconds outside her personal best time on Saturday morning and sought medical advice following the race after she felt unwell.

According to New Zealand team medical staff, Wiegersma has a generic stomach bug and is expected to fully recover within 24 hours.

The bug has not been reported in other parts of the team and there is no indication where the bug may have come from.

The women's 400m individual medley was to be Wigersma's final event at the Delhi Games.

Wiegersma, 20, of Southland, was the slowest qualifier with a time of 4 minutes 48.96 seconds.

On Monday , she missed a bronze medal by three-hundreths of a second in the 200m, though she set a new national record.
