New Zealand cyclist Linda Villumsen has won silver in the women's 29-kilometre time trial at the Commonwealth Games.

Villumsen finished third in the time trial at the World Championships in Geelong last month, and continued her strong form in Delhi.

She finished the course in a time of 39:04.15, just under five seconds behind the winner, Tara Whitten of Canada.

New Zealand's Melissa Holt finished fifth in 39:22.96, while Alison Shanks, who won gold in the individual pursuit at the velodrome, finished outside the top eight.

Men not in contention

New Zealand cyclists finished outside the medals in the men's 40-kilometre time trial.

Jack Bauer did best, with a time of 50:48.51, a little more than three seconds behind the gold medallist, David Millar of Scotland.

The silver medallist in the individual and team pursuits, Jesse Sergent, was one place back in ninth, finishing in 51:34.01, while a tired Gordon McCauley came in 13th.
