Environmental agency won't add bureaucracy, says National

The National Party says the creation of an Environmental Protection Agency won't result in more bureaucrats.

The party released its environment and conservation policies on 6 September.

It intends to expand the existing Environmental Risk Management Authority into an Environmental Protection Agency.

Environment spokesperson Nick Smith says bureaucracy has increased under the current Government, but National is confident it can make changes in key areas by re-prioritising current resources.

Conservation Minister Steve Chadwick, says the policies are bland, and she wonders what the National Party is not telling the public.

Ms Chadwick says the policies are simply repackaged Labour initiatives.

She says they ignore the conservation of marine life and protection of high country parks in the South Island.

Dr Smith says the Government is trying to save face after its costly rebranding exercise of the Department of Conservation.

He says National's policies are not copies of Labour's.

The Sustainability Council says National is right to focus on improving environmental governance and administration, but has failed to give details of how that would happen.
