Progressives release drug and alcohol policy

7:06 pm on 20 October 2008

The Progressive Party has launched its drug and alcohol policy, aimed at increasing the age at which it is legal to buy alcohol.

Party'leader Jim Anderton says the legal age should be returned to 20, because number of deaths and injuries involving young people has increased substantially since the age for buying alcohol was reduced.

The party policy, released on 18 October, also calls for the blood alcohol level for adult drivers to be lowered from 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood to 50 milligrams.

Mr Anderton says it is also time to give the community the ability to step in and shut down liquor outlets which persistently breach licensing rules.

He says at the moment police have to wait until a licence comes up for renewal before they can take action.
