Key shuts down Williamson on road toll comments

7:11 pm on 21 October 2008

National's transport spokesperson Maurice Williamson has been shut down by his leader, after he made further comments about motorists paying tolls for new roads, of up to $3 a trip.

He found himself in strife in August for floating the prospect of up to $50 a week, or $5 a trip on some roads.

Party leader John Key made it clear this time that he would be the one making any decisions about tolling on roads under a National government.

Mr Key says talks of tolls is premature.

"...there is no point in us making comments about what the price of a toll road would be, because we haven't even identified what roads would be tolled, so it's far too premature to be talking about numbers."

At an announcement about the Waikato Expressway on Tuesday 21 October, Mr Key said some roads, such as Auckland's Waterview Connection, may be tolled under National.

But he indicated Mr Williamson would not be the one making those decisions because as the leader of the party, Mr Key would set the criteria for toll roads.

National was forced into damage control when Mr Williamson made his $5 a trip comment in August.

At the time, Mr Key said that would more likely be about $2.

Mr Williamson has noe told Radio Live that under National, longer hauls could cost motorists up to $3.

Labour says the tolls Mr Williamson is proposing far outweigh what National is promising in tax cuts.
