Maori Party wants Parliamentary Commissioner for Treaty

The Maori Party is calling for a Parliamentary Commissioner for the Treaty of Waitangi.

The idea is part of the party's treaty policy, due to be released in Christchurch on Wednesday 22 October.

Maori Party candidate for Te Tai Tonga, Rahui Katene, says the commissioner would have a role similar to that of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment.

She says it is important to have someone to look through legislation and oversee government departments with funding responsibilities to ensure they are working with the treaty in mind.
