The ACT party is not convinced that climate change is as serious as many believe, and wants to scrap the Emissions Trading Scheme and pull the country out of the Kyoto Protocol.
The party promoted its climate change stance in Auckland on Friday 24 October, saying the scheme will impose cost on businesses, especially farmers, and make no difference to global carbon dioxide levels.
ACT leader Rodney Hide said the scheme would cost New Zealand tens of millions of dollars and 22,000 jobs.
And he said larger economies than New Zealand have refused to join the Kyoto Protocol to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
His party is not convinced about the scale of the problem, and Mr Hide said even if the computer models on climate change are correct, New Zealand would not make a difference.
"I have to say that personally I'm quite sceptical. I've had a background in environmental science and the only thing that people are relying on are computer models. Well, they're only as good as the assumptions going into them."
