Gap between Labour and National narrows in latest poll

A new political poll shows the gap slightly narrowing between the two major parties, with National ahead by 12 percentage points.

They were 14 percentage points apart in the last Colmar Brunton poll on 19 October.

National dropped by three points in the preferred party stakes, to 47%, while Labour is down one, to 35.

The Greens, who have announced their intention to support Labour, are sitting on 8%.

None of the other parties reached the 5% threshold, with New Zealand First on 3%, the Maori Party on 2.8% and ACT on 2.1%.

In the preferred Prime Minister stakes, there is one percentage point between the leaders of the two main parties.

John Key has dropped two to 38%, while Helen Clark is up three to 37%.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters came in a distant third, on 3%.

The poll surveyed 1,000 eligible voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1%.
