Rail tunnel project next year, says Labour

The Labour Party says it would fast-track a project to widen rail tunnels heading into Wellington, if it was re-elected.

Labour leader Helen Clark made the announcement on the Wellington to Kapiti rail service on Wednesday 29 October.

Miss Clark said the $150 million dollar project between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay north of Wellington would be started within the year, and employ only New Zealand workers.

Helen Clark said the tunnels are currently too small to carry some of the newer containers to the capital, and the project would improve journey times and the capacity for freight trains on the North Island's main trunk line.

She said the tunnel project would boost economic activity in the wake of the international financial crisis.
