170,000 people not enrolled yet

The Electoral Enrolment Centre says 170,000 eligible voters have still not registered to cast their ballot on election day.

National manager Murray Wicks said on Wednesday 5 November that about 2.97 million people, or 94.5% of the voting population, are currently registered.

But he said many eligible voters still have to fill out an enrolment form and return it to New Zealand Post by Friday 7 November in order to vote.

Mr Wicks said 81,000, or 47% of that group, are 18 to 24 year olds.

He said many young people do not think the election is relevant to them, but it is important they meet the Friday deadline.

Mr Wicks says about 100,000 more New Zealanders are registered to vote than at the same stage in the 2005 election campaign.
