O'Connor loses West Coast-Tasman

South Island electorates have undergone little change as the result of the election, although in the swing against Labour the party has lost the West Coast-Tasman seat.

The loss means defeated MP Damien O'Connor will not return to Parliament as he also just misses the cut in the Labour Party list.

Mr O'Connor, a Cabinet minister in the previous Labour-led Government, was defeated by more than 900 votes by National's Chris Auchinvole.

Another close race was in the Christchurch Central where the Labour Party's 2005 election majority of almost 8,000 was slashed to 880. The seat was won by newcomer Brendon Burns.

In Dunedin South, first-time Clare Curran, who won selection for the electorate ahead of sitting Labour MP David Benson-Pope, took the seat with a majority of 5,992 votes, reducing Mr Benson-Pope's majority of more than 10,500.

National has won Clutha-Southland, Invercargill, Kaikoura, Nelson, Rangitata and Waitaki.
