The Maori Party candidate for Te Tai Tokerau Waihoroi Shortland thinks his high placement on the list is due to the party recognising the importance of the electorate.[image:3487:third:right]
Mr Shortland is first on the party's list with current co-leaders Tariana Turia and Pita Sharples at numbers seven and eight respectively.
Mrs Turia says she will step down some time during the next term of Government while Dr Sharples says he will see out the term but will not stand again in 2014.
Mr Shortland says he thinks his high placement on the list is a signal to the people of the Far North that he is valued by the party and he is honoured to be at the top of the list.
Tariana Turia says the strategy with the list is to send a message about the future of the party, and to start indicating to Maori that there is a new face of the party coming through.
