Early voting under way

3:44 pm on 9 November 2011

Some of the country's young leaders have cast their vote, in an effort to encourage other young people to follow suit.

Advance voting opened on Wednesday and runs until 25 November, the day before the election, for people who won't be able to get to a polling booth on election day itself.

The co-president of the New Zealand Union of Students' Associations, David Do, was one of the first to vote and says one of the points was also to show support for MMP.

"It's a more consultative style of Parliament which means students and students' associations have more of a say in the process," he said.

Mr Do says the advance voting facility means students can vote before they move away for the summer break.

Chief Electoral Officer Robert Peden says more than 250 advance voting sites have been set up nationwide.

Mr Peden says a polling place has been set up at Scott Base in Antarctica.

The Navy ship HMNZS Canterbury will deliver voting papers to Department of Conservation workers on Raoul Island.

There are special arrangements for some voters including mobile advance voting facilities in Christchurch, and returning officers will visit people in hospitals and rest homes to collect their votes.

Details of advance voting locations are available at elections.org.nz.
