Veterans promised paid travel to WWII anniversaries

World War II veterans would have their travel to 70th anniversary commemorations paid for if the National Party is re-elected to Government.

Events at El Alamein in October next year and commemorations in 2014 of the battle of Monte Cassino and the D-Day landings would be among those covered by the travel package.

National's veterans affairs spokesperson, Judith Collins, says the plans cover business class or Air Force flights, accommodation, meals and medical help.

Ms Collins says the advancing age of the veterans makes it inappropriate for them to have to enter a ballot to vie for state-funded travel as has happened in the past.

Money would also be available for veterans to travel to commemorations within New Zealand.
