Greens unimpressed at NZ First claim

The Green Party has dismissed talk from New Zealand First that it could form a Government with the Labour Party alone following the general election.

In Radio New Zealand's poll of polls - an average of the four most recent surveys, the Greens are on 12.8 percent - enough to bring 16 MPs into Parliament.

But New Zealand First, at 6.9 percent on the latest average, says it could form a stable government with Labour without a need for the Greens, as it did in 2005.

Green party co-leader Metiria Turei told Nine to Noon that would not work.

"We will still be the third largest political party on September 20th - you just have to count.

"Labour and New Zealand First simply can't form a government together and if they did they would have to come to the Green Party for every single vote that they need to get in the House and it would put us in an enormously power position.

"I don't expect that's what New Zealand First is really wanting to see."
