National fire service building temporarily closed

Another big office building in Wellington has been temporarily shut after engineers brought in after November's earthquake ordered it be strengthened.

The Fire Service's national headquarters and the Medical Council have had to move employees out of Number 80 The Terrace until at least Tuesday.

The building is one of about 80 in central Wellington where invasive testing was ordered by the city council after the Kaikoura earthquake.

The Fire Service said it was told yesterday that repairs were needed.

It said it was still waiting for a full report and in the meantime it was taking a cautious approach and sending workers home.

It ability to respond to emergencies was unaffected, with the national response to the Christchurch Port Hills fire based out of the Wellington City Station.
