Strong showing by women in mayoral contests

9:46 am on 13 October 2013

At least eight women mayors have been elected by voters in today's local government elections.

Results are still coming in but show women will lead a number of key cities, including Christchurch and Hamilton.

Lianne Dalziel has been elected in Christchurch, Julie Hardaker in Hamilton, Steve Chadwick in Rotorua, Rachel Reese in Nelson, Jan Barnes in Matamata-Piako District and Lynne Patterson in Masterton.

Claire Barlow has been returned in as mayor of the Mackenzie District, as Annette Main in Whanganui.

Sheryl Mai is on the cusp of winning Whangarei. However, results there are still being counted and the council has warned it will be close.
