Updated at 5:51 am on 21 August 2010

There are 542 nominations for the 170 seats on the new Auckland super city.

Nominations closed at midday on Friday.

Returning officer Dale Ofsoske says 542 nominations have been received for the new positions - 23 for the mayoralty, 100 for the council and more than 419 for the 21 community boards.

Mr Ofsoske says there are more nominations than expected.

The new Auckland Council is being formed by merging eight councils.

It will have one mayor, 20 councillors representing 13 wards and 149 local board members representing 21 boards. It comes into being on 1 November.

Voting papers will be in the post next month. Voting closes on 9 October.
